Blind Tasting Logic

A slightly more straightforward wine to analyse and Riesling should certainly be a consideration due to the high acidity and citrus fruit notes, the petrol or flinty character should also push you towards Riesling, but Semillon or Sauvignon Blanc could be on your radar. Be aware that some students will automatically confuse the smoky elements of the wine with oak and it is important to get used to the difference, practice makes perfect.

It is almost impossible to put this directly in South Africa simply because Riesling is rare and our experience is limited, it would only be as part of a trio ( Chenin and Pinotage) that you could place it in its correct origin. A mistake is to guess that the wine is in Clare Valley or Eden Valley and then place the wines in the Australia. You would not normally expect Medium Plus alcohol in Australian Riesling.

A simple BLIC for the quality should get you to very good, with a slight lack of intensity on the palate taking it out of outstanding. Make sure that you judge the wine as having some complexity it should be able to age positively for a few more years, therefore creating the complexity of a very good wine.
